If you have ideas that you are interested in materialising and want funding by businesses that are knowledgeable about and operate in your chosen field or industry; you should consider the European Commission’s new FIWARE Accelerator Programme.
The idea is that the EC has set aside 80 million euros that it wants to inject into European SMEs and entrepreneurs, in attempt to help new start-ups blossom while turning the economic situation around. The European Commission has selected 16 accelerators to help with the project, in which candidates from all over Europe are encouraged to submit their business ideas and plans with a view to getting the investment they need to get started.
As anyone who has ever run a business will tell you, when you are starting from the bottom you need more than just money; you need the advice and expertise of people who know what they are doing. That is why the 16 accelerators, who have been given the responsibility of distributing the investments, will also give their support and mentor the winning candidates.
So that the candidates can get the specific direction and mentoring they need they are able to submit their start-up project to the accelerator that will help them the most. All of the 16 accelerators on the FIWARE Accelerator Programme focus on different domains within the world of digital economy including the likes of Social and Learning, Media and Content, Manufacturing and Logistics, eHealth, Transports, Agriculture, Smart Cities and Energy and the Environment.
The main stipulation set for the candidates is that whoever they choose to submit to, they need to make use of FIWARE technologies in their business. FIWARE, if you are unfamiliar with the name, is a very modern, open source, cloud based system that allows business and entrepreneurs to create and produce Future Internet services and apps, easier, faster and less costly than ever before.
Aside from seeing the results and how the match up to what the EC is hoping for – at least 300 successful and prosperous start-ups and SMEs – I really do believe that this is a great leap forward for young and new businesses and business owners. I have heard so many horror stories about people having great ideas, but because of the lack of funding and appropriate mentoring and guidance they have sunk before they ever really got started.
With the EC’s bold and adventurous FIWARE Accelerator Programme, there is a real chance for new European businesses to thrive with European funding and mentoring.
